Yesterday we wrapped yet another conversation for CEA’s ongoing series “The Intersection of Art & Innovation.”
(Previous discussions can be found HERE, HERE HERE, HERE, and HERE.)
Jane Friedman, a well-regarded veteran of the book industry, joined me to discuss the quickly evolving book industry. (More on her, HERE.)
Jane was the publisher of Writer’s Digest, has served as web editor of The Virginia Quarterly Review and her latest initiative, Scratch magazine, is a quarterly publication for writers, all about the intersection of writing and money. (Much more on that, HERE.)
In the course of our thirty minute conversation, we examined the ways digital media and the democratization of content has enabled writers to reach previously unimaginable audiences. The challenge is that most of this content is now expected to be published for free, with “exposure” being the new form of currency. Understanding that the industry, and the ways writers and readers navigate it, has changed forever (and will continue to change, every day), we focused on ways these complicated rules of engagement can be understood –and utilized– in ways that empower writers and readers.
